I love the music and beats of this song ! and we again chanced about this song in a collection of Sufi Music, and then I started wondering what it means, googling gave this good link, which explains the meaning of the song. O Lal Meri Pat - Dama Dam Mast Qalandar
This has been one of my favorite nos. I have been humming this for years now. It has been a hot favorite with all singers, notably qawwals and these days the reality show contestants. Some of the known names who have lent their voice to this - Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen, Madam Noor Jehan, Wadali Brothers, Reshma, Sabri Brothers, Jagjit Singh, Runa Laila, Lata Mangeshkar, bands like Junoon and this list endlessly goes on. Many college bands have attempted this giving a rock flavour. That, one song could be so popular amongst so many, I wondered, what this song is all about, what's its true meaning. This and last week I spent looking for all the versions and answers to my questions. What a fascinating and satisfying journey it has been.

This song is in the honor of Sufi mystic 'Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar'. Every word of his name has a meaning - he was known as Hazrat ( prophet of GOD ), Lal ( he wore red robes or mothers fondly call their kids as Lal ), Shahbaz ( Shah - King and Baz - Falcon, king of falcons and an Iranian GOD who led them to victory, a divine spirit ), and finally Qalandar ( a qalandari - a sufi saint, poet, mystic, noble man ). He settled in Serwan ( Sindh, now in Pak ) and tried bringing peace between Hindus and Muslims. Hindus regard him as GOD and reincarnate as well. You can hear many Punjabi singers, singing in his praise. He is also fondly called as Jhulelal.

So the song goes like this :

After learning the meaning, the fondness for this song has grown multifold. I have attached clippings of various singers. You will thouroughly enjoy all the renderings. I have a special mention for the one from Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from his young days and the young Abida Parveen.

Right from finding about "whether it is ok to drink water while standing" and "did US really land on moon" to compilation issues, to comparative studies, to finding long lost friends, finding good songs and their lyrics, finding meaning of words, checking spelling, the first thing i type is "google".

And I realize that I am taking so much info from people all around the world, it is time to give out some info, and then it comes in terms of a blog entry, once in a while.

Who is the knowledgeable one ? One who has lot of data, and can authoritatively talk about it. The more you know, the more people respect you. Funny, but that's true. We are in information age, aren't we ? But it still may not make you the wise one. Well in that case, the web provides advices on personal issues and how to tackle something. So it is both Knowledgeable and Wise !

What will happen if it were to disappear one day ? Suppose all the data in all the storage devices gets deleted due to some rays one day ! Man, it will be very heavy loss, much much more than the one I suffered when my folks discarded my comp sc notes in class tenth. No phone numbers, No contacts, No information, No advise, oops not even this blog !! I better get my stones sharpened, I have go find some cave and start carving ! What the heck ! I still have paper power :)

I looked up the net to look for some home remedy for cold and fever for my dear hubby, and found this interesting recipe. Made it, and it was delicious ! The onions had become soft and were edible without having to churn them into paste.

Offcourse, my hubby made sure that he took the medicine he believed in after this, my fair lady, icecream at our favourite ice-cream parlour, Ricthie Rich (they have awesome Vanilla ice-cream as well as loads of other specialties.

The Soup Cure
Onion & Garlic Soup
Ingredients - Remember to try and use Organic products
3 large onions
3 cloves of garlic
1 sprig of fresh parsley finely chopped
4 cups of filtered water

Method
Chop the onions and garlic into small pieces. Or alternatively liquidize them.

Bring a stainless steel saucepan with 4 cups of filtered water to the boil and then add the chopped onions and garlic and the parsley to the saucepan and bring to the boil.

Reduce the heat to a simmer, cover the saucepan and then let it simmer for 15 minutes. Until the onions have cooked until they are very soft.

Serve it either as is or liquidize with a thickening agent for a creamy soup.

Thickening Agent
Add 1 tablespoon of chick pea flour and whisk it up in 2 tablespoons of filtered water.

Add to the soup and stir, until the desired thickness is obtained, then simmer for 5 minutes.

Vroom, Vrooooooom. My wife made fun of me as i put up the above pic for this blog :) The Worlds Fastest Indian was an inspiring movie of a real life Burt Munro from down under with his awesome bikes. It is a must watch for all Bikers. Anthony Hopkins plays it well as Burt Munro, and the movie has very good inspiring quotes from time to time.
